SUMMER IN CASABLANCA
In the countless cafés and bars they sit, the old men of Casablanca, slowly sipping their tea, as if they have all the time in the world. As I take a closer look at what they are drinking, I am surprised to find out that it is not, as I was expecting, black tea at all, but rather the delicious, fresh perfume of Nana mint, that is wafting from the little engraved silver pots, in which it is being drawn. Then I suddenly hear it, a rushing and splashing as if from a small waterfall. As I turn around to look, I notice the waiter enjoying pouring the green mint tea from a height of about a metre into a tea glass. As he does so, it is pure enjoyment to watch it foam and glug, before I am again amazed by the huge amount of sugar that is then added to it. “How on earth can they drink it like that?” I ask myself, but my curiosity gets the better of me and upon trying it myself, I am pleasantly surprised to find how refreshing and stimulating the Nana mint tea tastes. Over the next fortnight, it becomes my trusty travelling companion on my journey through the Maghreb, where it is enjoyed by everyone, from palace dwellers to those sitting on the humble clay floor of tents in the desert. Meanwhile, however, I do not have to travel quite so far to enjoy the taste of the Nana mint, because it is now available in Europe too.
